cropped-earth-angel-thumbnail-official1.jpgThe star of the book herself, Kamlyn Paige. I have always used this photo as my inspiration for her, as well as the girl on the cover of Earth Angel (Book #2 in the Kamlyn Paige series) that was specially designed by Bespoke Covers. Kamlyn is a young woman who got pregnant just weeks after graduating high school and was abandoned by the father, who went on to pursue his own dreams. Her parents promised to help, but before the baby was born they were in a fatal car accident. For five years Kamlyn raised Danny Paige on her own with only the help of her best friend, Cara. When Danny was taken from her too, she no longer had anything to live for…except revenge. She joins the Council of Darkness as a Huntsman to track down the inhuman creature who murdered her son and make sure it never kills another innocent child again.

    Cara Bellamy

Cara The Yin to Kamlyn’s Yang, Cara has been her best friend since the first grade. She’s been there for Kamlyn through everything and helped her raise her son when no one else would. Though she does not play a large role in Kamlyn’s adventure to the Council of Darkness or in her training to be a huntsman, she is still important to Kamlyn and will have larger roles in later novels in the series.

    Don Vander

Don2 Don is the mysterious man who showed up to Danny’s funeral whom Kamlyn had never seen before. When she breaks down in front of her house he’s there to lift her up and also reveal to her a world she never knew existed. He gives her something no one else could, a way to have her revenge. As a huntsman and member of the Council of Darkness, Don sponsors Kamlyn as a new recruit and ushers her into the depths of a new and dangerous underground world.

    Ryker Alexander

Ryker Stetson 2Ryker is the quintessential bully. He has money, status, and he’s a descendant of huntsmen on both his mother and father’s side. He’s been training for the day he could prove his worth to the Council of Darkness since he was five-years-old. He is also a firm believer that only descendants should be allowed to train as Huntsman, as it had always been. It’s the first year the Council is allowing non-descendants in to train due to the ever growing threat from the creatures of Darkness. As a result, Kamlyn becomes his number one target. He’ll stop at nothing to get her thrown out of the training group.

    Holly Everest

olive everest 2Holly is the only other non-descendant in the training group, though many don’t know because they think her Godmother, who is a Huntsman, is her real mother. She reveals the truth to Kamlyn about her heritage and they instantly become friends and allies in training.

Eleanor Buhari (The Head of the Council of Darkness)

    Nancy Wilson

Eleanor is not like all the previous heads of the Council. She did not start her career off as a Huntsman, but in the Records Department. Her father was the the Head of the Council of Darkness in Africa as was his father before him. She is very smart, cunning, perceptive, and tougher than she looks. She becomes a guide post for Kamlyn through her training, someone she can confide in with honest and whom she trusts wholeheartedly.

    David Yu

    The Weapons Instructor

David is the Weapon’s Trainer at the Council.

    Atticus Magee and Achilles Magee

The twinsThe twins are in Kamlyn’s training group and fully support her being there despite not being a descendant. They provide her with humor when it’s needed most and helps her to deal with Ryker and his bully friends.

  • Research is a Bitch

Image result for research for booksIf you’re a writer like me then you’re probably no stranger to doing some heavy research for your books. I’m currently in the process of researching supernatural beings for my Kamlyn Paige series and it is so many things! For one, it’s  time consuming.

In today’s age of self-publishing, authors are in a hurry to get their next book out before the reading world forgets about them. It’s the curse of the indie author. But the age old saying of “quality over quantity” should never be forgotten. Readers can be unforgiving over inaccuracies, even in make believe creatures and beasts. That’s why I’ve been pouring over websites, books, and Wikipedia to make sure I know everything I can about Demons, Mermaids, Werewolves, Angels, Giants, and more. It’s time consuming, but in the end I think it will bring a great quality to my series that the readers will appreciate.

Research is also a great way to put some new information currency in your knowledge bank. I’m learning so many new aspects about the supernatural world that I can now carry on debates and conversations with fans and can even be considered an “expert” in the genre. Learn all you can about what you’re writing and readers won’t have room to doubt that you know your stuff.

How I organize my research used to be kind of a mess, but now it’s easy to sift through. I’m using one of my Novel Notes Writing Journals and am using extra loose leaf paper for what I can’t fit in there. These pages are either tucked into my Novel Notes or in my folder binder for the series. This way everything is right there at my fingertips when I am writing and can’t remember if it’s ogres or giants that eat people.

That’s all I’m doing, for hours on end, late at night when I’d rather be reading, for my next book. Leave you research tips and tricks in the comment box for others and me (I can always use the help!) Happy researching, writers!

    reading, writing

BROKEN ANGEL FINAL COVER 2As I prepare to start writing Broken Angel, the prequel to my very first novel, Earth Angel, I was forced with the arduous (and somewhat self-loathing task) of re-reading that first sloppy plunge I took into writing and self-publishing. I must say, in complete modesty, that I was shocked to find I still loved the story! There were a few things I would change here and there, nothing major, but what I didn’t love was what the editor (whom I paid an amount I never wish to speak of again) did to my first baby- the long paragraphs with different thoughts running together, the placement of dialogue, so many things stuck out to me like a sore thumb and I’m sure to readers as a big flashing sign that said “This writer is new and doesn’t know what she’s doing!”

It’s always important to never forget how far you’ve come along. If you reread your first book and think “ick, yuck, was that even me who wrote that?” Don’t get down in the dumps over it and hate yourself and everything you write (as us writers are often known to do). Just smile and say “Wow, I have improved so much!” That’s exactly what I said when I finished reading my first novel over a year after I released it. But it left me with another obsession. Now that I know I’m a much better writer I want to completely redo Earth Angel so that it is up to my current standards. I want it to be something I can say I’m 100% completely proud of, and as of right now I’d say I’m only 78% proud of it.

I have to ask myself, though, as I lay awake in my bed, avoiding the call of sleep for too many hours, to what end? With the way authors can self-publish these days, it seems like we can just update our books any time we want, continually forever and ever amen if we so choose. But is that really productive? I wish I could say I knew the answer to that question, but sadly I don’t. I like to think that this en devour I’m undertaking withEarth Angel is not a waste and I’m also hoping that when I re-read it in another year to write the next chapter in the saga that I don’t feel the same way because my writing skills have once again improved. All I know is that right now, after the words and mistakes are still fresh in my mind, I can’t think of anything but correcting them and then moving on with the story. I’m hoping that it will only take me two weeks to complete, but I’m not rushing it. If I need a month then I have that month to spare. I can’t wait to get started!

    Alex Apostol

PS sorry this post was late. I’ll try to be better about it in the future, but as I’m not writing for the rest of this month, there really shouldn’t be a whole lot for me to share with you. Enjoy the holidays!
