Hailey and Triss lived in Center, Missouri for all their lives, from the time they were born till Hailey went off to college in Honolulu, Hawaii with Triss right by her side. The girls frequented the Hale Koa Military Hotel luau for good food, drinks, and dancing.

The roadtrip begins in Norfolk, Virginia where the girls lived for the last six years, since Hailey graduated from the University of Hawaii with a bachelor’s in Marketing. She got a job right out of college at a large company in downtown Norfolk. Triss came along to continue living with Hailey while she worked her way up from Bud Light promo girl to manager of the Bud Light promo girls of Norfolk.

The first stop the girls make is in Charleston, South Carolina, even though they’d only been driving for six and a half hours. Triss claims she wants one more camping night on the east coast for old times sake, but what she doesn’t tell Hailey is that she invited all their Norfolk friends to join them for one last goodbye bonfire party!

The infamous hog man gas station in Alabama. It’s safe to say the girls don’t stop again till they are far away from here.

When they stop at a gas station Subway for dinner, the girls notice it’s next door to a small casino shanty and they’re not able to leave until they have a peek inside and maybe a turn on the slot machines. Triss makes friends with some local boys and the girls end up staying the night at their house where they’re having a big backyard party.

Van Horn, Texas is where the girls have a close call run-in with the law. It’s a good thing Triss can make up a convincing story on the spot and fake cry like her grandma just died.

A deserted street in the middle of a desert is not the place to get a flat tire. Good thing Hailey knows a little bit about fixing things on cars. She gets down and gets dirty to get them out of there while Triss stands around. It isn’t till Hailey has the tire off though that Triss tells her she doesn’t have a spare. Luckily, cowboys are always not too far away to help.

Beautiful San Diego, California is the destination, but can the girls’ friendship withstand all the roadtrip (and Triss) puts them through?

Girls Like Us - High Resolution a novel
I’ve started working on my third book titled Girls Like Us. The book is a comedy about the life-long friendship between two girls in their mid-twenties as they travel across the country together. Right now I am in the process of outlining and finding inspiration for the characters and their stops in their roadtrip from Norfolk, Virginia to San Diego, California. Beatrice “Triss” is fun-loving, wild, and free while her best friend, Hailey, is more grounded, loyal, and strong-willed. Here are some photos I found to inspire the bond I’m trying to write about.

Hailey and Triss when they first met at the age of seven in elementary school. They met at recess when Hailey was making snow angels. Triss asked if she could play too.

Ever since that winter day, they were inseparable- truly best friends forever!

As they grew older, their friendship only grew stronger. Boys came and went, but Hailey and Triss never lost sight of their sisterly bond.

They avoided trouble like pros during high school, Triss always leading the way, and the fun didn’t stop once they were in college either. Hailey left for the University of Hawaii and Triss was right behind her.

While Hailey earned her degree (major still undecided for me, not for Hailey. She’s very grounded)…

Triss was living it up, spending her days on the beach and working at Hooters in Honolulu.

Though their lives went in separate directions, Hailey and Triss never did.

Now their friendship will be tested as they make their way from Norfolk, Virginia to San Diego, California with many hilarious stops along the way.

The friendship of Hailey and Triss rivals that of Thelma and Louise!

This was my first year participating in Nanowrimo and I have to say it was a lot of fun. I met a lot of great people and got to have a place to vent out all my frustrations while I was finishing adding to my second novel, Hunted Angel: A Kamlyn Paige novel. I’ll definitely be participating in this again next year and hopefully interacting and meeting even more great authors around the country.

Congratulations to all authors who completed and won NANOWRIMO 2014!

I’ve made you wait long enough, so here she is…Alex Apostol!

AC: Tell us about Alex Apostol as a child (all the strange details!). Or maybe just some personality traits. Did you show signs of a future as a writer, even when you were young?

AA: On my twelfth birthday my mom gave me a small diary and ever since then I have always kept a journal. It was a great way to get all my feelings out. I think this is really what got me started on my love of writing. I’ve always been an avid reader, too. It wasn’t until I was twenty-one, when I switched my major for the sixth time and settled on English, that I thought I could actually be a writer for a living. As far as the somewhat eerie and scary subjects of my first two books, Earth Angel and Hunted Angel, a deep love of all things scary runs in my family. My dad and I enjoy watching horror movies together to this day and his mother was known to watch scary movies alone in the dark in her house with the doors unlocked, which is my plan for tonight…though maybe not the unlocked door part.

AC: That sounds legitimately terrifying. You are braver than I! So, what have been your best and worst experiences in writing so far, and how have you handled them?

AA: My best experience with writing so far has been working on my second book, Hunted Angel. I think I’ve really come along these past few years as a writer. I’m learning to let go of my self-consciousness and fear of judgement. It’s been a real great learning experience to dig deep inside myself in order to drive my characters and plots. Hunted Angel touches on subjects that have been very dark and hard times in my own life.

My worst experience with writing was probably when I was trying to go the traditional route of publishing. I’m very sensitive and took all the rejection letters personally, feeling defeated with each one. Then, when I finally landed a contract with a small publishing agency in Tennessee, I hated being stripped of my creative freedom. I had no say over the editing of my book, over the cover design of my book, the layout, nothing. This is what eventually and mutually ended my contract with that publisher, but made me realize that self-publishing was exactly the right route for me.

AC: What an appropriate segueway! I read on your blog about this very thing happening to you. Can you tell us some more about that?
