  • Books I Read in 2020

2020 was a strange year. It was extremely busy for me while it was not so busy for others. That means while a lot of people had downtime to read as much as they wanted, I was rushed and frazzled trying to squeeze in my reading where I could. I was only able to read 20 books in 2020 and here they are! And here are a few of my favorites by genre:

Best Fantasy: The Lost Queen by Signe Pike

Best Historical Fiction: Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman

Best Classic: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Best Non-Fiction: Hamilton by Ron Chernow

Best YA: As Old as Time by Liz Braswell

Best Horror/Paranormal: Stoker’s Wilde by Steven Hopstaken and Melissa Prusi

  • Welcome 2021! Here’s Hoping You’re Better than 2020!

    January 1, 2021
    writing

I think we can all agree that 2020 was a bust. There were definitely hard times, whether you were one of the unfortunate ones who lost their jobs or had to continue working through the pandemic because you were a necessity. Whether you got sick or knew those who did. Whether you lost loved ones or had to comfort those who had. Whether you stayed at home the entire year or you were one of the braved ones to venture out with your mask and hand sanitizer at the ready. No matter who you are, it was a crappy year. So here’s hoping 2021 is better! Now, there are so many things that are out of our control right now, so how about we focus on some things that are with a good old fashioned New Year’s Resolution list! I love these, even though I don’t always accomplish everything on my list, often I do and it feels really good to look back and say “yeah, I did almost all of those things and more!” So, here goes; my New Year’s 2021 Resolution List.

    1. Publish 3+ books

    2. Grow my Instagram Following to 10K.

I gained a good 1k just in the last month alone, meeting so many new bookish friends that I think it might be possible! Help make it possible and give me a follow today.

    3. Grow My Mailing List to 5K.

An author’s mailing list is so important. It’s how we can deeply connect with our readers and also give them lots of goodies like sneak peeks and giveaways. Show me some love and sign up for my mailing list today. You’ll get a free book in return!

    4. Take Violin Lessons

STENTOR - Harlequin Series 3/4 Size Violin Outfit Metallic Deep Purple - Cranbourne Music | Musical Instruments

My husband and daughter got me the cutest little purple violin for my birthday last year and I have yet to learn how to play it. Now’s the time! I’m signing up for lessons.

    5. Start Riding Horses Again

I have not ridden a horse in over a year, almost two! Life has gotten in the way of this love of mine, which is okay. I had a lot of work, school, family, and of course the ever lovely Covid to occupy me. But enough’s enough. My daughter keeps asking me to go riding, which she never has before because she’s only six, but we are going to start taking lessons together again. Yay! Time to break out the old riding journal again! If you’re a rider you should check it out. You can keep track of your horse’s health, your lessons, your rides, your competitions, and more.

    My Riding Journal

    6. Use my Hungarian Mounted Archer Bow, Just Once!

HD wallpaper: Princess Merida, Brave, Animation, Disney Princess, 4K | Wallpaper Flare

I’ve had it for a few years now and have yet to shoot it once. I got it when I was in my Merida phase after seeing Brave a hundred times and thought it would be fun to try out. Only problem is I live in a subdivision and I’ve been forbidden to release any arrows into my backyard. There is a park down the road I’ve seen people target practicing at before. I just have to find the time to go there.

    7. Read At Least 25 Books

I read 20 new books in 2020 and now it’s time to kick it up a notch. My goal is to read at least 25, and I’m off to a good start. I’m currently reading The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden and it’s literally the best book I’ve read in a long time! I highly recommend it if you like historic fiction, folklore, and a little bit of fantasy. It’s YA appropriate, but it doesn’t feel juvenile at all while reading. I also plan to read The Forgotten Kingdom by Signe Pike, and the rest of the books following the Bear and the Nightingale as well. I even plan to start my first Sarah J Maas book (I know, I know, late to the party as usual), so if you have any suggestions on which one to read first let me know in the comments. Goodreads and Bookbub are the review sites I use if you want to follow along and get some good recommendations throughout the year.

    8. Eat Healthy & Exercise More

Ah, the classic New Years resolution! This one is always on the list, but this year I’m going to stick to it! (hahaha! I mean, I’ll try at least.)

What are your goals and resolutions for 2021? Comment below! I hope you all have a very safe and healthy and fun and happy New Year!

  • New Cover Reveal for Broken Angel by Alex Apostol!

As much as I liked the previous cover for Broken Angel, I feel it did not fit well with the mood and look of the series and it did not properly represent Kamlyn and her style while she is in her training to be a Huntsman at the Chamber of Darkness. When I found this image for my cover I was over the moon in how perfect it is! I would love to hear what you think about the new cover too. Leave your comments below!

  • Book Review: “Fable” by Adrienne Young

    December 3, 2020
    writing

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    Rating: 4 out of 5.

    Fable by Adrienne Young

I have to be honest when I say I picked up this book really not knowing much about it and having never read any of Adrienne Young’s books before. But I kept seeing it everywhere on Instagram and the cover was too beautiful for me not to own it. I went in knowing very little. I knew it was YA and it was about pirates. That’s all. I haven’t read a YA novel in quite some time so it was a little hard to get back into that mindset. I’ve been reading a lot of historical fiction, so very different. It took me at least 25-40% of the way through the book to really get into it.

There was not enough scenery description for me to actually envision Jeval and Dern and the places she went. Even the ship. There was also very minimal character description beyond hair color, scruff, and occasionally skin color. I’m a reader that likes a lot of detail to be immersed.

The story itself was a good one. When it was to the point where it looked like Fable was actually going to find her dad I was into it and ready to see that play out. I was not so much into the romance part of the story. I think if there had been a little more depth to the characters then I would have been more excited to read it. I did enjoy it, though, especially toward the end, and I will be picking up Namesake to continue the story when it comes out.

For those of you that don’t know what Fable is about the story follows a teenager named Fable. At fourteen she was abandoned by her pirate father on a dangerous island the day after her mother went down with his ship (great guy, eh? Why she would even want to find him is beyond me). For two years a ship crewed by equally aged teenagers came into port and bought gems from her, which she dives to the bottom of the ocean to recover. This crew has helped to keep her alive. Otherwise she would have starved to death there on Jeval, the pirate island. She has saved her coin and finally at eighteen she has enough to pay for passage to find her father. The ship that takes her is the same teenage crewed ship that’s been buying from her. Not to give too much away but they have some adventures as they stop on an island called Dern and then make their way to Ceros where her father is doing business with his ship empire. She has come for her inheritance, a spot on his crew. The entire time I was reading I was like “WHY? WHY WOULD SHE WANT TO CREW FOR HIM?” I think if I were in her position and he did to me what he did to her, I’d rather starve to death than work for that man, but that’s just me. Because of this I found it hard to relate to Fable.

The book was worth a read, and I do think if you are more in the YA novel/teenager mindset it would be a fast-paced, action-packed pirate read for something different!
