Author Spotlight: Nandana Vinod

Today I am shining the spotlight on author Nandana Vinod. Hello, Nindana! Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Nandana Vinod . An eighty year old soul in an eighteen year old body. I was born and brought up in kerala , India  . I currently finished my 12 th grade and am preparing to join the psychology major in college. I write what I find beautiful, what makes my soul happy . Whether it be the seas or the skies or far beyond that, I write what I feel.  I have been a co-author to several anthologies and am currently working on my single work. I don’t want to rush into it because when people read my book I want them to recognize it. I want them to feel like they have known my book for ages , I want them to find a piece of themselves in it .

That’s a very interesting goal to set for your writing, but I like it! What genre(s) do you write in?

I now write basically in non fiction Poetry.

Are you traditionally published, independently published, or both?

To date I have been a co-author to several anthologies under several publications.

What made you choose the publishing path you’re on?

Being a co-author is a best way to start your writing career I guess.

Why did you choose to write poetry?

It’s easier for me to express what I feel when it’s non fiction , and I mostly write in a slow paced poetic style .

When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

It all started with a middle school versification contest. I went there with the sole intention of ditching my classes and I ended up being the winner . And  I used to write poems to my best friend and she really helped me a lot in improving my language and poetry.

I love that you would write poetry for your friend. I used to make my best friend read my short stories to give me feedback and help me improve. Tell us a little about your writing processes and your writing space.

I usually write in the mornings . I grab my laptop, open word and just start typing . Whatever come to my mind I write it , no forcing, no dictionaries, just raw.  Then I check for errors.  My work space can sometimes be messy or well organized. There is no in Between.

Morning writing is the best for me too since everyone in my family sleeps in later than me so the house is quiet. It’s just finding the motivation to actually get up when my alarm goes off at 5:30am (haha) What are your favorite books to read?

I love coming of age romances and science fictions apart from poetry . I am a huge Potterhead, who is also a Slytherin. I love the portrayal of bisexual and gender fluid characters in books like Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the universe or Heart Stopper. My comfort book will always be All The Bright Places.

I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned yet except of course the Harry Potter series. I’m a Ravenclaw! I don’t think I’ve actually met someone sorted into Slytherin before! What does marketing look like for you? Are you an avid believer in social media or do you like paid advertisement more? Do you DIY or do you have someone else or a company handle it?

I usually focus on my content rather than my followers. Post genuine content that’s It . I myself handle my account .

Yes, marketing is the least fun and definitely shouldn’t be the focus over content. If you have to do any research for your books, how do you like to accomplish this? What is your organization of research like? How long do you usually spend on research?

It usually takes a long time for me because I go all the way down to the deep with a topic . I refer genuine articles, videos and most important of all the people connected with it .

That sounds very interesting! Which of your books is your bestseller and why do you think it is? What do readers say they like about it? Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Yet to publish .

Of all the characters you’ve created, who is your favorite? (I know, it’s like choosing a favorite between kids)

It would be josh . A character based on my favorite person. He inspired me a lot , the way he address a problem and how gently he takes care of it . He speak less , with wise words. He is the most secretive person I’ve ever seen . So impossible to read but written in very simple language.
